American Indian & Alaska Native Living is a one-hour weekly talk show focusing on health issues in Indian country. The live talk show was developed for radio by the Native Education and Health Initiative, a non-profit organization providing comprehensive services for the health needs of American Indians through education. The show covers a broad range of health issues, viewed in a holistic way in keeping with traditional Native perspectives. Acting as show host is David DeRose M.D., president of the Oklahoma-based CompassHealth, Inc.
Dr. David DeRose, Host
David DeRose M.D. is president of the Oklahoma-based CompassHealth, Inc., which addresses health issues through lectures, seminars, workshops, written materials and radio and television programming. He is also a board-certified specialist in internal medicine and preventive medicine, having earned a master’s degree in public health with an emphasis in Health Promotion and Health Education. His research has been published in peer-reviewed medical journals, including the “Journal of the American Medical Association,” the “Annals of Epidemiology” and “Preventive Medicine.” DeRose has worked closely with many Native Americans, including tribal leaders, in an attempt to help address health problems in Indian Country. His treatment strategies are based on natural therapies that provide new hope for conditions like diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and obesity. Dr. DeRose can also relate well to urban Indians. He was born in Chicago, practiced medicine in the New York City area, and for four years directed community-oriented preventive medicine programs for one of America’s largest hospital systems — Orlando-based Florida Hospital. He says, “Our target audience for the show is American Indians, but we invite everyone to listen to ‘American Indian Living’ to raise their level of cultural awareness.”
